I am a microbial ecologist interested in understanding the diversity and function of microorganisms and the processes they carry out in the marine ecosystem.Particularly, I investigatethe distribution of microorganisms across spatial and temporal scales, the magnitude of growth of marine microorganisms, and the biological and oceanographic factors that control the diversity and growth of marine microorganisms. In addition to studying bulk bacterioplankton communities, in the last years I have geared my research towards a functional guild of particular interest, the aerobic anoxygenic phototrophic bacteria. These organisms are capable of using both organic matter and light as energy sources and are a relevant component of the microbial food web in processing organic matter.
